More hotels!

A few things to take note of when booking your flight to Portland is that [allegedly] the day to get the lowest fares is if you book on Tuesdays or Wednesdays- specifically 3pm EST on Tuesdays. You can read more about the best time to buy here. Also, if you're really into bargains, I would recommend following certain airline carriers through their online sites such as Twitter or Facebook. We'll keep an eye out for sales and whatnot too, and post them on our Twitters/Facebooks or even on our blog.

The best thing might be to book a flight and hotel together, but I found that if two people (or more) are traveling together, it could get expensive if you book flight+hotel. For instance, flights right now are at about $279 (off orbitz.com for travel from 4/29-5/1) and with a two-night stay at any of the hotels we previously listed, it'd cost around $300 so total it'd cost two people roughly $600 whereas if you book the flight+hotel, it'd be almost $600 per person.

There are, however, less expensive hotels around the area, which would save you even MORE money. Here's a few I found that were off the MAX line. The MAX is our tram that travels almost anywhere in Portland. Take a look here for its routes: TriMet.

Red Lion Hotel Portland Airport
7101 NE 82nd Ave
Portland, OR, US 97220
(503) 255-6722

This hotel is going to be the best bang for your buck. You'd have to call and make sure, but I think they have a shuttle going to and from the airport. I'm pretty sure it's near the MAX line too, so you should be able to get to and from downtown for around $2/person without a problem (again, not 100% sure about this- I'd ask to make sure). There's a bar in this hotel that has a wall of like 10 flat screen tvs which is pretty rad. Our wedding will be around the NBA playoffs, so that might come in handy. :) Rates for this hotel start at $59/night!!

Doubletree Hotel Portland
1000 NE Multnomah St.
Portland, OR 97232
(503) 287-6111

The Doubletree off Multnomah is near the Oregon Convention Center and there are multiple MAX lines that run through this area. It's also near a lot of restaurants, and within a mile or so of some pretty stellar bars. You can also ride the MAX to Lloyd Center for some shopping if you don't feel like going into Downtown Portland. Be aware, though, that this hotel is not within Fareless Square even though it's so close. To take the MAX from here, you'd still need to buy a ticket. Rates start at $70, and I'd recommend booking this hotel soon if this is your desired hotel because if there's an event at the Convention Center, hotels around there will book up pretty quickly. And really, if you find a hotel/motel/inn that is near the Convention Center, it's a pretty good bet you're within walking distance to a MAX stop.

McMenamins also has a few hotels around town that are pretty rad but it'll be difficult to arrange transportation. McMenamins is a brewery in Portland, and is well known for their Terminator beer (Pete's favorite of theirs) and rates start at $50!! Take a look at their website here and take a look around. I know that Edgefield has a room where up to six people can stay in one room for about $150-175 a night. Why wouldn't you want to stay at a hotel that brews its own beer? The only downside is that "European-style guest rooms" means that some of the rooms share bathrooms. I'd look into it if you don't mind sharing, or if you do mind, they do offer private baths, just for a higher rate. Of all the McMenamins hotels, I'd recommend Edgefield and Kennedy School the most. Old St. Francis School looks really fun, but it's in Bend which is a 3+ hour drive to Portland.

I hope this helps. I had a more difficult time than I thought finding hotels that were off the MAX line for under $100. Sometimes, though, there are flash sales for hotels here and so I'll keep an eye out. We do still have a few months, but I know rates for airfare will be cheaper booking in advance. But also keep in mind that there are always sales for airfare too.

If you don't mind not being on the MAX line, there are a ton of cheaper hotels, motels, and inns. I was just trying to figure out hotels that would be convenient for you to hop onto the max or walk instead of renting out a car and having to drive. Pete and I are currently living in Beaverton, OR which is about 10 miles outside of Portland, and there aren't a lot of hotels around Beaverton, but the ones we do have are fairly affordable. When you book a hotel, if you're not renting a car, I'd ask if the hotel provides a shuttle to and from the airport, and if they don't, you should ask how far the hotel is from the nearest MAX stop. For the day of the wedding, if you stay outside of downtown and are not renting a car, the most sufficient way to get to the venues is to hail a cab. Ladies, Portland is a city that's huge on walking, so remember to bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes/flats!

Let us know if you need help with anything! We'll be keeping an eye out for airfare as well as hotel rates and post them here. Keep checking the blog- but we'll post on our Twitter/Facebook pages too. Hope this helps! We can't wait to see you!!

Accommodations in Portland

Hang tight, out-of-state family and friends!! We've been having some trouble with our invitations but our plan is to send them out by this next week.

Here are a few hotels we'd recommend because of their location and their prices. We'd highly recommend you stay within downtown because hotel rates will generally be the same and because you can literally take the max for around $2/person from the airport to downtown and taking the max within downtown is free so you don't have to rent a car! This is just our suggestion. If you stay outside of downtown, though, there are plenty of places to rent a car (of course) or you can rent bicycles here too. How very Portland you would be for showing up to the wedding on a bicycle! Just sayin... :)

Keep in mind that these hotels are located within downtown (SW) Portland and our wedding venues are in NW Portland. Staying at any of the hotels below will give you a great Portland experience, but you may still need to hail a cab to get you to the wedding venues. It costs me $25ish to get from downtown to my house in Beaverton so I can't imagine it costing more than that to get from SW to NW Portland. That, or you can bribe my brothers to pick you up. They'll probably do it for a beer (which our reception venue is just a block from a few breweries and bars). If you need help figuring out transportation, please don't hesitate to ask us. Leave a comment or email us.

The Nines
525 SW Morrisson St.
Portland, OR, 97204
(877) 229-9995

Pete and the groomsman will be staying here the night before the wedding, and he and I are staying here the night of. This is one of the highest rated hotels in Portland, and one that a lot of celebrities stay at when they're in town. Urban Farmer and Departure are restaurants in the hotel and both are superb. The Nines is in the prime location- it's right across the street from Pioneer Courthouse Square which is the "living room of Portland" as well as Pioneer Square Mall which has shops like H&M, Kate Spade, Betsy Johnson, etc. etc. There is a plethora of restaurants and bars within a one block radius from The Nines. In other words, you can't go wrong with staying here. Right now rooms are going at a rate of $164/night

Hotel Lucia
400 SW Broadway
Portland, OR, 97205
(503) 225-1717 ‎

This hotel is so cute and modern! It's off 4th and Broadway which is really only down a block and up a block from The Nines. I don't remember for sure, but I think Typhoon (a Thai restaurant) is connected to Hotel Lucia as is Bo Restobar which is owned by Typhoon but is more of a bar-type place. Rooms are going at $139 off hotels.com.

Paramount Hotel
808 SW Taylor St
Portland, OR, 97205
(503) 223-9900

This is a beautiful hotel and is just a few blocks from the Portland Art Museum, and is surrounded by restaurants and cafes, but the restaurant attached to the hotel, Dragonfish, has pretty decent sushi. It's right off the Park Blocks and is just a really nice walk around town. Rooms start at $129.

Hotel deLuxe
729 Southwest 15th Avenue
Portland, OR 97205
(503) 219-2094 ‎

Hotel deLuxe exudes elegance and luxury. It's very old Hollywood and simply said, it's stunning. You need to look up pictures of this hotel! Like the other hotels listed, it's in prime location for good eats, and shopping. Rates start at $134.

This hotel is just a few blocks from our church in NW Portland:

Holiday Inn Express- NW Downtown
2333 NW Vaughn St.
Portland, OR 97210
(503) 484-1100

I don't know anything about this hotel other than it's about two or three blocks from our church. After church on Sundays, Pete and I like to wander over to Meriweather's which has one of the best eggs benedicts I've ever eaten. Meriweather's is off 27th and Vaughn so just a few blocks from this Holiday Inn. I can't speak for the condition of the hotel but rooms start at $126. Take a walk down NW 23rd and you'll hit some of the quirkiest shops ever. There's also a really good French bakery off NW Thurman (St. Honore) that you must try if you stay in this area.

Okay, so that's all for now. Coming from a Portlander, I'd really recommend staying downtown just because that's where you'll truly get the most of our city ESPECIALLY if it's your first time. If you come up again OR if you stay longer than just a few days, I'd recommend staying on the East side where there's a HUGE food scene, and you can get really observe Portlanders in their natural habitat. It's glorious.

Or you can watch this show. Not an exact depiction of this beloved city, but it's pretty darn close. haha-jk. It's hilarious though.

Please let us know if you have any questions, and again stay tuned. Invitations are coming!

Time's a tickin'

photo via printerest

Over the weekend, Pete and I took our required marriage class through the Northwest Catholic Counseling Center in NE Portland. We had to fill out quite a few questionnaires, but my favorite was the "yes or no" section. I had to hold my breath a couple times to keep from laughing out loud while the entire class was quietly filling out their answers. One of the statements read, "My partner generally likes my personality. yes or no" Wouldn't YOU laugh out loud if someone were to ask you, "hey, does your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend like your personality?" I thought so.

Well anyway, that was the gist of our weekend. We did, however, come closer to finding my wedding band. Pete and I have come to really appreciate Shane Company. The salespeople there are genuinely there to help as opposed to being there just to make the sale (F KASSAB JEWELERS), and their prices are so reasonable. We've been in and out of so many different jewelry stores, it's starting to get annoying. (You wouldn't think a girl could hate jewelry stores, would you?) Pete found his ring so easily, and I'm jealous he doesn't have to worry about it anymore. It's not that I'm trying to be difficult, I just know what I want, and I'm not finding it at the place I want to buy from, but instead from places where I want to karate chop the salespeople's heads off.

Oh well, I just have to be a little bit more patient. Time's really ticking though. I recently got a wedding countdown app for free on my phone and I checked it today and there are only 94 days left until Pete and I get married!! It doesn't sound like it's that close, but when I think about all the little projects we made for ourselves, I start to get a little light-headed.

This made me extremely happy and excited though:

Pete and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day (aka Pete's half birthday) because I've always found the holiday to be rather obnoxious, and so I've never cared about February 14 until this year! Anthropologie is coming out with a wedding line!!! While everyone else is getting dolled up and going out to dinner at an overpriced restaurant, I'm going to be sitting at home admiring BHLDN alongside my darling while he plays Madden on the ps3. I can already tell married life is going to be marvelous. We are awesome, aren't we, Darling?

Truly, after taking the marriage class, Pete and I realized that we work really well together. We are so undeniably opposite and different that we complement (and compliment) each other so well. By the way, we learned that in a healthy relationship you should abide by a 5:1 ratio of positives to negatives. Just something to think about. :)

Hope you're all enjoying your week! Also, check out our FABULOUS photographer's blog- she posted our engagement session today! Woot woot! Sara Gray- check her out!

Sustainable Love via NYTimes

"For centuries, marriage was viewed as an economic and social institution, and the emotional and intellectual needs of the spouses were secondary to the survival of the marriage itself. But in modern relationships, people are looking for a partnership, and they want partners who make their lives more interesting."

“If your partner is helping you become a better person, you become happier and more satisfied in the relationship.”

These are quotes from a NY Times article a while back called "Sustainable Love" by Tara Parker- Pope on what makes a happy marriage. Read the article and tell me what you think.

Also, would making 1,000 cranes on top of the other projects for the wedding be too ambitious?

Another birthday and Jetsetter!

HAPPY BUTT-DAY (yesterday), KIMIKUN!!!

photo via Style Unveiled

You get a Nintendo cake because one of the fondest childhood memories I have with you was spending countless hours playing Contra, TMNT, and Mario on the Nintendo. You're all grown up now, and we are so happy and proud to call you our Little Brother. You are so special and we looooove you!

Now, onto some news! Since planning the wedding, Pete and I have lost count of how many websites for "giveaways" and "deals" we've signed up for. One website that has really come in handy- even if it is just to gawk at the amazing resorts there are in the world- is Jetsetter.com. Right now, you can earn $25 just for signing up, and then a $50 credit on top of that as a holiday giveaway! The membership is free, and members only so here's your invite!!

Here's what you do:

1. Sign up for a membership with this link. You get $25 just for signing up- if you already have an account, you can skip this step.
2. After you complete your registration, log out of your account.
3. Log back in using this link to redeem your $50 credit!

It'll be worth it- I promise! There are so many different trips you can take and the prices are very low for what's included in most packages. I haven't seen a package that included airfare so that's just one stipulation. Pete and I haven't found a place for our honeymoon yet, but I spend a lot of time daydreaming on this site every morning. haha! Even if you don't plan on taking a trip anytime soon, it might be worth it to have this free membership as a reference for when the time comes for a much needed vacation.

Happy travels and tell your friends!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LITTLE BROTHER!

Today is Kiet's birthday, and he [finally] turned 21!! It seems like just yesterday he was sent home early from Ms. Leneve's kindergarten class because he bit a classmate who tried to steal his toy. That feisty-ness never really subsided and now he's in the midst of training to fight for our country. Couldn't be more proud of you, Little Brother- don't get too drunk tonight. :)
